Kiwi pasta, pies and pikelets going cage-free

October 8th, 2018

SAFE is applauding manufacturers Delmaine Fine Foods and George Weston Foods for joining the international cage-free egg movement.

After hearing from SAFE, both food giants have developed domestic policies in line with this growing trend.

Delmaine is one of the most prominent fresh egg pasta suppliers in the country, both as Delmaine branded products and through supermarket lines.  Delmaine Fine Foods’ chief executive officer, Gerry Lynch, told SAFE he believes it is the right thing to do.  “We will be committing to completely moving away from caged eggs by the end of 2024.”

George Weston Foods makes Big Ben pies, Golden Crumpets and Burgen Gluten Free bread – all of which will be cage-free by 2025. This commitment aligns with the company’s Australian and UK policies.

Several of the largest global food manufacture lines operating in New Zealand also recently adopted cage-free policy, including General Mills, Pepsico, Mondelez, Kellogg’s, Kraft Heinz Company and Nestle.

“This cage-free movement is now unstoppable,” says SAFE’s Corporate Campaigner, Jennifer Dutton.

“Both around the world and in New Zealand, the public has spoken loud and clear; cage eggs are archaic and cruel. Whole cage eggs are coming off the shelves and ingredient cage eggs are next. The factory farm cage-egg industry is cracked for good.”

The worldwide campaign to free hens from cages is part of a global revolution by animal advocacy groups, including members of the Open Wing Alliance, of which SAFE is a partner organisation.
