Over three million layer hens live short and cruel lives crammed inside wire cages to produce eggs. Colony cages are the proposed replacement for battery cages but still have the same basic welfare problems associated with farming hens in cages.

Produced for SAFE by the Humane Farming Association.

Over three million layer hens live short and cruel lives crammed inside wire cages to produce eggs.

Nearly 90 per cent of the one billion eggs consumed in New Zealand are produced by caged hens that spend their entire lives mistreated and abused.

Since 1995 the average New Zealander has increased their egg consumption by three-dozen eggs per year totaling a whopping 230 eggs per person, per year - the majority of which are cage eggs!

This year is a crucial time for hens and for each of us to make known to the government, MPs, retailers, and the egg industry that hens deserve better.
