UNIVERSITY SAYS NO TO CAGED EGGS

Canterbury University has become the first New Zealand university to agree to use ethically produced supplies for on-campus catering. The new ethical policy voted for unanimously by students attending a recent AGM means UCSA cafes will no longer use battery eggs.

SAFE applauds Canterbury University for its decision and congratulates those involved in leading the charge. SAFE assisted and participated in various meetings and actions to help promote the issue. SAFE education officer Nichola Kriek and local student members attended various meetings and Nichola delivered a convincing argument at the UCSA AGM in defence of battery hens.

"I really want to thank those who took the time to come along and attend the meeting. With their help we managed to bring about a first for universities in New Zealand and managed to secure a vote of compassion for the hens," says Nichola.

SAFE wishes to also thank Claire Shuker for her motivating article in Canta and David Klein for bringing attention to the issue as the giant chicken in the Tower race.
