Current affairs show Campbell Live aired a story last week about what constitutes a free-range chicken farm highlighting, once again, the need for mandatory egg labelling. SAFE campaign director Hans Kriek explained how a ban on the old-style battery cage will not improve the life of battery hens. The size increase for new cages is so insignificant that a hen will still only have less space than a sheet of A4 paper to live out her entire life. Free-range farmer Rob Darby expressed concern that consumers are still being kept in the dark about the conditions hens are reared in and that some free-range farmers also have battery caged hens. Darby wants these farmers identified as he said consumers would be unwilling to buy eggs from farmers who continue to use cruel battery cages. Some free-range farmers also beak trim their birds, something Darby likens to cutting off your thumb.
