MEATLESS CRUSADERS A HIT!

SAFE's crusading vegetarians returned for another culinary stand off against hungry meat eaters at this year's Wildfoods Festival in Hokitika. "Two years running our Meaty Vegan Gonads have been a huge hit", says campaign director Hans Kriek. "We again sold out and gave out over 800 leaflets on the benefits of a vegetarian diet and had a ball doing it!" Made from soy, mushrooms and chestnuts the gonads were beer battered and deep fried.

"They tasted delicious and proved to festival goers that you can have tasty food without hurting animals. The gonads' slightly provocative shape of two balls between a sausage went down well with the crowd and created many laughs", says Hans.

"We were a life saver for the many vegetarians attending as they were struggling to find anything to eat. Even sceptical farmers who tried them had to admit that they were amongst the tastiest food items on offer. SAFE's stall featuring the image of lovemaking vegetables with the slogan "Go Vegetarian, become a real food lover" was one of the most talked about and photographed stalls at the festival, a great way to spread the message ", says Hans.
