MARINELAND DEAD IN THE WATER |
Two current affairs programs, Campbell Live and Sunday, recently focused their attention on Napier's Marineland and the issue of keeping dolphins in captivity. Viewers were given an overview of Marineland's history and present predicament. Both items made it clear that when Marineland's last remaining dolphin dies, the curtain will fall for Marineland and its unacceptable spectacle of performing dolphins."This will mean that New Zealand will be captive-dolphin free and will join the ranks of many other countries where the keeping of dolphins in captivity is prohibited", says SAFE campaign director Hans Kriek. Hans was interviewed by John Banks on Radio Pacific about the issue and explained to listeners that the people who signed a petition to replace Marineland's dolphins would have been largely unaware of the suffering of captive dolphins. SAFE is confident that its years of campaigning against the captive dolphin industry have resulted in a change in attitude, both on a public and political level and was pleased to hear the admission from the Napier City Mayor that Marineland is "dead in the water".
