To mark international Boycott Procter & Gamble Day SAFE volunteers around the country staged actions to help highlight P&G's shameful animal testing record. In Auckland, volunteers stood along Queen Street holding a 30-metre ‘clothesline of shame' exposing P&G's ‘dirty laundry' that included products, boycott banners and posters.
Display boards contained photographs of all of P&G's products commonly found in supermarkets and a message warning shoppers that P&G tortures animals and to boycott these products. Volunteers handed out letters for members of the public to sign and send to P&G's NZ CEO urging them to catch up with modern science and use more humane and effective ways of testing their products. Wellington's P&G Day action involved a dozen volunteers in lab coats handing out leaflets, a ‘vivisector' experimenting on a large bunny under a bloody sheet and even some friendly rats to draw attention to the issue. Organiser Terina Graham reported that some members of the public were so enthralled with what the volunteers were doing they signed the letter on the spot and vowed never to buy P&G products again! The volunteers also conversed with a few doctors who sympathised and praised their efforts. The result was a very successful day during which numerous people were educated about the cruelties of animal testing and what products are tested on animals. A stall focussing on P&G and animal testing was also organised in Greymouth by local SAFE volunteers. Christchurch SAFE volunteers were also out in force to raise awareness of P&G's bloody practises. ‘Vivisected beagles' lay under bloody sheets with anti-P&G messages while volunteers handed out information and talked to the public. "P&G are the biggest contributors to animal testing in the world and currently own just under 100 brands ranging from food items, beverages, cleaning products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. This year over 50 groups worldwide stood up to P&G and held actions against P&G's animal testing policies. It was great to support this global day of action and send a strong message to P&G that we won't stop exposing their cruel practices until they stop using animals in experiments" comments Caro, SAFE's campaign officer. Some of P&G's well-known brands include Cover Girl, Max Factor, Oil of Olay, Clairol, Natural Instincts, Nice 'n Easy, Pantene, Tampax, Iams & Eukanuba.
