BATTERY HENS RAIDED AND CLOSED


Two Auckland poultry farms were closed after police, MAF and food safety officials raided the farms last month. Officials found up to five birds crammed into each cage, all of which measured a mere 40 centimetres high and wide. Dead hens were also found alongside emaciated live birds intended for human consumption. More than 5600 birds had to be destroyed and another 5000 relocated.

STREET PARTY A SIZZLE SELLOUT!


A SAFE vegetarian sausage sizzle held at the recent Lyttelton Street Party was so popular the SAFE team reported they sold out in 2 hours! Everyone who bought a sausage also received information about the costs of eating meat and many people came back for seconds (or thirds) after discovering how tasty they were.

SAFE RESUMES CIRCUS CAMPAIGN


SAFE campaigners converged on Hamilton on Saturday 14th June on Jumbo's behalf. Over 20 people joined together in a peaceful protest to ask the public not to go to the circus. Local resident Jay, joined the demonstration after seeing Jumbo standing, swaying from side to side in the same spot for 3 hours, and was one of many who complained to the local SPCA.

UNIVERSITY SAYS NO TO CAGED EGGS


Canterbury University has become the first New Zealand university to agree to use ethically produced supplies for on-campus catering. The new ethical policy voted for unanimously by students attending a recent AGM means UCSA cafes will no longer use battery eggs.

EXPERT TALK SUCCESSFUL


The new Auckland SAFE office had its first public meeting on 27 May with over 20 people in attendance. Expert speakers Michael Bourke, a personal trainer, and Leila Masson, a pediatrician, covered ways to get the best out of a vegan diet, highlighting issues relating especially to children and fitness.

SAFE STAGES ACTIONS AGAINST GLOBAL ANIMAL TESTER


Saturday 17th May marked the international day of action against Procter & Gamble, one of the largest animal testers in the world that produces household products, cosmetics and food items. SAFE staged successful nationwide actions and stalls in Whangarei, Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin to highlight P & G's shameful animal-testing record.

PIGS IN INVERCARGILL!


SAFE campaign officer Sacha Dowell and local SAFE volunteers hit the streets of Invercargill recently dressed as pigs to ask local residents to sign postcards to be sent to local MP Eric Roy. Over 60 postcards were signed in a few hours and posted off to Mr Roy asking him to help New Zealand's factory farmed pigs.
