CHRISTCHURCH
FILM NIGHT The Chicago Tribune described it as "a gritty, shocking look at how man can turn all too easily on his proverbial best friend." Dealing Dogs is an excellent feature-length documentary about an undercover operation in America aimed at a dog-breeding facility. The dogs were used for animal testing. It explores how an animal rights group attempts to close the facility and free the dogs. The screening is at 7pm on Thursday, 17 July at the SAFE office located at level 1, 145 Armagh Street, Christchurch. For more information call the SAFE office 03 379 9711. Volunteer meetings Next meeting - Thursday 7 August, 7pm In the summer of 2007-8, Andrew Phillips, explorer, philosopher and vegetarian made a long awaited trip to one of the most mysterious continents on the planet, Antarctica. Spectacularly complex from a legal, biological, psychological and historical perspective, the continent remains a fascinating subject for study and provides one of the most important barometers of global change. His talk will feature a brief introduction to the history and legal background of the continent, as well as an account of his experiences as a vegetarian on the ice, and an analysis of the nature of the scientific monopoly on the continent's activities and the steadily increasing tourism. And, of course, describe the epic adventure of a lost polar bear. These are now held on the first Thursday of every month, 7-9pm at SAFE, Level 1, 145 Armagh St. Meetings will include guest speakers or education/discussion sessions on animal rights issues, and info on events/actions you can get involved with. New people are always welcome.
