It’s been an emotional few weeks. Vicious animal deaths sparked a fierce public outcry, while the sad death of Kashin, the Auckland Zoo elephant, was a tragic loss. Animal lovers, including SAFE, rightly condemned the Tongan man who brutally killed and barbequed his dog, but SAFE also added to the moral debate by questioning why our society abhors the killing of a companion animal for food when millions of farm animals are routinely killed without protest. Personal disdain was warranted after legal counsel challenged the one-year jail sentence of the callous student-wimp who savagely tortured and killed his Jack Russel dog, citing his young age and no former criminal convictions. This individual deserves no leniency. The death of Kashin, one of the two aging elephants at Auckland Zoo, has left many saddened. Many have been asking SAFE if this provides an opportunity for Jumbo the circus elephant to be moved to the zoo. SAFE campaign director Hans Kriek explains why this is not an option.
