Announcements from both the Minister of Agriculture and the New Zealand Pork Industry Board appear to indicate that efforts are finally being made to improve pig welfare in New Zealand. After nearly two decades of campaigning and lobbying the industry and government, SAFE is relieved to hear both parties are finally starting to talk some sense. While naturally cautious and sceptical, SAFE will keep a watchful eye to ensure these promises of improvements don’t become long-winded empty ones.
 
MINDING ANIMALS CONFERENCE
It spanned six days, with six sessions running simultaneously each hour, and was attended by the movers and shakers in the field of human-animal studies. The conference had over 200 presentations with 400 delegates in attendance from 24 different countries. Dale Jamieson called it the ’Woodstock of the animal rights movement’. He wasn’t wrong.
