Today SAFE celebrates as we have received welcome but unexpected news that Environment Waikato has rejected an application that proposed to incarcerate 50,000 pigs to a life of hell. Had the application been approved it would have resulted in tens of thousands of pigs each year having to endure a life of misery and suffering. What a relief!

SAFE learned late last year of a Waikato piggery proposing to expand its operation. The proposal would have made it the biggest intensive pig farm in New Zealand. Kereone’s McIntyre Piggery applied for resource consent to increase the size of the piggery by almost 50 times, from 1100 to 50,000 pigs. Quite frankly the whole idea stunk so SAFE, along with the local community, decided to campaign to stop it.

In what was a rather lengthy and laborious process, the council heard from the piggery owner that the operation was entirely sustainable and a benefit to the local community. The council remained unconvinced. Despite the initial application being revised by the piggery to ensure success the council still felt the risks were too high. I’m sure being reminded of the piggery owner’s shady history of non-compliance and environmental breaches didn’t help either!

SAFE congratulates Environment Waikato and all of the local residents that made submissions against the proposal and invested time and money to prevent this ‘disaster-waiting-to-happen’ from eventuating. The application sought to operate for a terrifying 35 years. Can you imagine all of those poor pigs year after year? Collectively we can rejoice knowing we helped save many, many lives. The applicant will no doubt appeal and we will fight that too.

PIGS SPARED MISERY
SAFE CELEBRATES VICTORY!
SAFE is celebrating after Environment Waikato declined resource consent applications to build what would have been New Zealand’s largest pig farm. Piggery owner Ken McIntyre sought to expand his existing piggery in Kereone into a 50,000 mega-pig farm, however this was later reduced to 30,000 pigs in an effort to secure a successful application. ERIC’S DELICIOUS CHEESECAKE
SAFE’s recent office guest Eric merrily made this recipe for our Christchurch staff last Wednesday. We can still hear the Mmmmmmmm’s!

3 Tbsp margarine
1 packet Nice biscuits (Arnotts), crushed
1 punnet soy cream cheese (Kingland)
4 c mixed berries
1/4 c sugar
1/4 c fruit juice
4 Tbsp flour
1 tsp baking powder

Mix biscuits and melted margarine together and then press firmly into the well-greased base of a springform tin.

Gently heat berries and sugar in a covered pot. Whip the cream cheese before adding to berry-sugar mix. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder before adding fruit juice. Stir until smooth. Once berries start to boil add to flour mix, stirring constantly. On medium heat, return ingredients to pot and stir until mixture bubbles and thickens (careful - mixture very hot!). Pour onto base. Put into the fridge until chilled. Remove from tin and serve. Yummm!
