SAFE SUPPORTER BULLETIN

Next month we descend on New Zealand’s art deco capital city and turn up the volume. In a good way though. SAFE is staging a free outdoor family concert and walk for the animals. It will be huge! It will be magnificent! You must come. The city’s seaside deco pavilion will offer a picturesque setting for a gorgeous afternoon relaxing on the grass by the sea. You will also get to enjoy some fabulous New Zealand singer-songwriters. Of course SAFE isn’t putting on such a large-scale music event without good reason. It is for the animals. Specifically, to highlight the plight of animals used for research within laboratories around New Zealand.

Dubbed The Big Paws Out! this event will encourage the local community to support the campaign to save beagles and other animals from cruel experiments. And local residents should be concerned because Napier and the Manawatu region have become home to the largest companion animal breeding and research facilities in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is appalling to think of any animal being used for animal research but it is even more repugnant to consider cats, dogs, rabbits and horses restrained and vulnerable on a cutting-room floor. We must object. The Valley Animal Research Centre is currently breeding hundreds of beagles. We don’t know what type of tests these beagles will undergo. What we do know is that VARC is already conducting privately funded toxicity research on beagles and has admitted they are prepared to undertake lethal experiments when necessary. We must all object.

If you live close to Napier please join me in what will be an excellent day. Help us positively empower the local community to take action against animal experiments. We have a terrific line-up of talented musicians, food stalls, giveaways and the local council has even made a special concession to allow dogs to join in on the fun so bring your pup along. Hope to see you there!
