Romance and courtship are in full bloom this week as many people embrace Valentine’s Day with heartfelt devotion and perhaps a child-like adoration for those they fancy. Over one billion romantics will exchange cards, chocolates, flowers or a new kiss. Facebook is the new virtual portal for exchanging little sweet-nothings. We can even express virtual love and affection to our four-legged friends! At least virtual cards leave us tree-hugging types with more trees to hug so I guess we all benefit in some way!

Valentine’s Day highlights that we are social creatures at heart who crave company and long to be loved and adored. Interestingly enough, our social behaviour is similar to others within the animal kingdom (minus the cards of course!). Few species remain solitary. Many species also engage in often convoluted courtship routines, or as animal behaviourists describe them, mate-selection rituals. Now that’s way too crass a description. Where is the passion and romance, guys? After all, animal courtship can involve complicated dances or touching, vocalisations or displays of beauty or fighting prowess. Sounds like a lot of effort (not too dissimilar to our own antics) to be categorised in such a mundane way.

The need for friendship and physical contact is something else we share with the world’s wild side. I recently received a number of compelling images that speak a thousand words. Each image reveals one species showing affection towards another. This young monkey and pigeon photograph is particularly moving. It eloquently captures feelings of affection and frailty all too familiar to us humans. While animals may not celebrate Valentine’s Day they certainly know how to express love and affection. Some animals even enjoy offering gifts (although I’m not sure a fresh bloodied carcass is my idea of a gift. I much prefer chocolate!). If you’re lucky enough to find yourself being a Valentine recipient enjoy the attention. Don't forget to offer some extra affection to your animal friends too.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Director

SAFE AUCKLAND EXPANDS
A highly successful 2007 has added even more pressure for us to further grow SAFE’s presence in Auckland. This month the Auckland office has once again relocated, less than twelve months on from its last move, which was also due to growth. Newly appointed Office Manager Chris Zack says they have been busy planning the year ahead as well as finding new premises and relocating. More. . .

SCHOOLS LAUNCH HEALTHY FOOD PROGRAMME
It is not compulsory but Auckland&srquo;s Northcote College thinks teaching children how to prepare and cook healthy food should be. The government agrees and has issued food and nutrition guidelines to early childhood centres and now recipes have been sent to 1500 schools to get young people cooking simple, healthy meals.

Teenage SAFE volunteer, vegan and student, Yasmina Gillies, was interviewed by TV3 news in a report on the issue. She says she&srquo;s proof that there is a questioning teenage market out there that needs helpful advice on all dietary options. More. . .

STOP MEAT PRODUCTION. SAVE THE WORLD - GREENPEACE
The animal rights movement has been saying it for years: meat eating hurts animals, is bad for your health and destroys our environment.

SAFE has continued to highlight that meat eating is the leading cause of deforestation, wastes huge volumes of water and produces enormous amounts of greenhouse gases, causing the planet to warm. Now international environmental lobby organisation Greenpeace is also speaking out on the issue in a recently released report. More. . .

ROUND THE BAYS VEGAN CHALLENGE
Each year tens of thousands of people take part in Auckland’s annual Round the Bays fun run. This year a group of vegans are taking on the masses under the banner Team Vegan.

Team Vegan organisers are putting out a call to fellow vegans to join the team. This is a great opportunity to increase the visibility of the vegan community, get some exercise and have some fun at the same time. We plan to have ‘Team Vegan’ t-shirts made and SAFE is sponsoring an end-of-run veggie BBQ for participants. More. . .

SAFE FILM NIGHTS - Christchurch
Film nights will commence each third Thursday of every month with the first screening to held on Thursday 21st Feb at 7pm screening ‘Peaceable Kingdom’. This is an inspiring documentary about the Farm Sanctuary’s animal rescue and education program. Refreshments and discussion will follow. Email sacha@safe.org.nz for more info.

SAFE ACTIONS IN AUCKLAND
The past few months have seen regular stalls in Aotea Square along with the first volunteer meeting for 2008 which included a workshop about the Save the Beagles Campaign and the latest series of protests in the Hawke’s Bay area. A SAFE crew has also just spent 3 days running a stall and information centre at the Splore music festival. Email Chris to find out how to get involved at chris@safe.org.nz or 361 5645.
