This time last year I was boasting that we were especially fortunate to have 800 people signed up to collect during the 2006 appeal. Being extremely optimistic, we forecast the unrealistic prospect of recruiting up to 1000 supporters shaking buckets. It was hopeful at best. Well, come collection day we had over 1240 who managed to raise a record–breaking $265,000 – an outstanding accomplishment. If you helped make this possible, thank you from us all.

2007 has been an extremely challenging but successful year for SAFE. The people who mastermind our successes are passionate, loyal and amazing. They give everything to make SAFE the champion organisation it is and you should be proud. I am. It is coming up to my 18th year with SAFE and I seldom feel defeated or dejected or that we are not making a significant difference in New Zealand. Working in this field you see and hear of the most terrible atrocities inflicted on animals. Humans can be an embarrassing and cruel race. Thankfully the stories of pain and suffering are offset by some humbling and humorous accounts of human goodwill and compassion, but never completely. There are still too few campaigners, activists, members and supporters. As SAFE continues to grow however so too does our vision of how we can make this a more compassionate world for all.

I grow tired of asking for your support but I am always heartened at your generosity. So again I ask for your help this week by donating your time, if not your money, towards SAFE’s largest nationally coordinated event. Bring your friends or family and make it your Christmas pledge for the animals. We anticipate some 1300 people collecting this year. Optimistically, we could exceed 1500. With your help this Friday or Saturday, we just might!

From everyone at SAFE, I wish you a very compassionate and peaceful festive holiday. For the animals, I too wish they may all soon have no reason to fear humans and can enjoy every day in peace.

If you haven’t yet registered we trust that you will do this now or like many people, just show up on the day (hopefully with your friends in tow!)

STARS SHINE FOR SAFE!

New Idea magazine this week features an interview with the talented kiwi actress and long–time SAFE supporter Angela Bloomfield. Angela says she‘s bringing her two children, Max and Maya, along with her to help her collect. She says her kids just love animals.

SAFE is thrilled Angela, along with Outrageous Fortune star Robyn Malcolm, Elemeno P’s bass player Lani Purkis, actress Nicola Kawana and the ever–popular TV personality Suzanne Paul, will be on the streets collecting for SAFE in Auckland on Friday. SAFE’s promotions manager Amanda Sorrenson says “It’s awesome that we have a star–studded cast of some of New Zealand’s finest stars and entertainers backing SAFE and its work. They are taking time out of their extremely busy schedules to help raise money for SAFE and they wanted me to convey that they urge all other SAFE supporters to do the same.”
