I feel I only just survived a visit to the local shopping mall yesterday. There should be warnings at the door – ‘Enter at your own risk’! Well ok, it was hardly fighting over food to survive but it was near enough. Eager shoppers racing for bargains while others were almost wrestling in the aisles over that last ‘special’ item. For a time of year supposed to be all about the festive spirit of cheer and goodwill it’s getting ugly. Of course Christmas means loads of things to different people. For me, it’s being accused by friends of being a festive humbug and right they are. Maybe I am just exhausted. I do know for us at SAFE we are at our craziest around this time of year. We spend the entire year giving our all to do our utmost best for the animals. Then like clockwork, at the end of the year, along comes our biggest nationally coordinated event – the annual SAFE appeal. We survive this too, but only just.

It requires a ridiculous amount of coordination and communication. The demand on staff, volunteers and members is enormous but necessary. If you ever needed a reason to get involved now is the time. You will join over 1200 other caring New Zealanders determined to collect donations across the country in the interest of helping SAFE help animals. The appeal is SAFE’s lifeline which allows us to achieve brilliant results throughout the coming year. Without it, we simply would not be able to undertake any of our large–scale campaigns nor continue to challenge animal abuse.

It is a frantic and stressful time but what better reason to help than knowing you are doing your bit to help animals this Christmas. Sign up today. Try convincing your best friend, partner, mother, sister or just about anyway with a soft spot for animals to join you. In the end, you will be helping to raise an estimated $300,000, which will be used to make meaningful changes for animals in 2008. That is the greatest gift we can offer, don’t you think?

SAFE APPEAL
THE BUILD UP CONTINUES

Thousands of posters, dozens of newspaper articles, community notices, radio bulletins, magazine articles (New Idea, Healthy Options, Pet Magazine, Pulp), email notices, flyers, recruitment stalls, mailouts to over 10,000 recipients, telephone calls to over 4,000 supporters, more recruitment stalls, networking with likeminded groups and pleas to just about everyone we know... it’s all in aid of making the 2007 SAFE annual appeal another record breaker.

Every year we make the impossible possible thanks to those who agree to help collect donations during the appeal. The scale of the work is massive yet each year a small team of dedicated and capable workers backed by a brilliant team of volunteer coordinators and helpers manage to achieve the unthinkable. But it needs you!

1 1/2 WEEKS TO GO!
REGISTER TO COLLECT TODAY

Last week we only had 300 registered to collect. Calls for help have encouraged a further 400 to sign up. According to Sacha Dowell, SAFE’s national appeal coordinator, “It’s awesome!”

“We can’t quite celebrate just yet when we are still 600 collectors short of our target. Meeting our target would mean we are more likely to reach our overall goal of raising $300,000 for our work in 2008. We just need everyone to bring a friend and we will be sweet!”

Two hours makes a difference
Every person on the street for two hours or more can raise well over $200.

We know you are likely to be extremely busy over Christmas but even a couple of hours before or after work on Friday, or on Saturday, will really help us out. The SAFE appeal is a numbers game ... the more people collecting the better the returns will be. Please register by either going online or by calling toll free 0800 SAVE US.

TV COMMERCIAL A SUCCESS

SAFE’s first ever television commercial about the plight of factory farmed pigs has received an enormous response from caring New Zealanders. The emotionally charged 30–second commercial created in house has been screened on TV3 and Sky for the past three weeks. The advert features a factory farmed sow severely confined, unable to move freely. The message is simply “Factory farmed pigs suffer. Help her.” The response, where people make a $3 donation by text, has been overwhelming says Campaign Director Hans Kriek. More... Click here to view the commercial.

SAFE CHALLENGES FIRST INDOOR RODEO

New Zealand’s first indoor rodeo, the JetStar International Rodeo, didn't go unchallenged. Its needless abuse of animals resulted in widespread media attention including TV3’s Campbell Live. SAFE held a demonstration outside the Westpac Arena in Christchurch to remind those attending that they were supporting the cruel treatment of rodeo animals. More...

13 DECEMBER 2007 #38

Angel Food is very proud to announce that fresh vegan marshmallows are finally available and they’re delicious! As one happy marshmallow muncher said, “It’s like eating a sweet cloud.” SAFE has 3 fab boxes to give away. The catch this week is that you must be registered to collect in the appeal (or will register before the draw closes) to qualify!

Congratulations to Lara Hartmann for winning the awesome organic cotton “Please Don’t Eat Babies” t–shirt cleverly designed and produced by Tippitappi♥com

PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE ICECREAM CAKE
Crust:
20 Oreo cookies
1/4 cup vegan margarine (e.g., Olivani), melted

Filling:
4 cups vegan vanilla ice cream, softened (we used chocolate So Good ice cream – only because they didn’t have any vanilla)
1/2 cup peanut butter
2 tbsp maple syrup
1/4 cup salted peanuts, finely chopped

To prepare the crust: Lightly oil a 9–inch (23cm) springform pan and set aside. In a food processor, process the cookies until fine. Add melted margarine and process again until well combined.

Press firmly into the bottom of the pan and refrigerate for one hour. With an electric mixer or food processor, blend together the ice cream, peanut butter, and maple syrup until well mixed. Spoon filling evenly into pan and sprinkle the top with peanuts. Place in freezer for at least one hour. Remove from freezer five minutes before serving, pop open the pan, and cut into slices.
