SAFE SUPPORTER BULLETIN
CAMPAIGNS X EVENTS X NEWS X ACTIONS X RESCUES X GIVEAWAYS

So just where have we been? And more important, why haven’t you been receiving our fortnightly bulletins? Just not good enough I know! If it makes you feel better you are not alone. It wasn’t for a lack of trying or enthusiasm I can assure you. The upshot is we have lots of exciting news to report.

The list is by no means complete. There is so much more that has been accomplished and organised but I’ll leave some for the next bulletin. As you can see with or without the bulletins SAFE continues to achieve its goals and remains busy. Speaking of busy, there is no busier time for SAFE than the lead up to the national SAFE street appeal. It’s all hands on deck and your help is vital if we are to have another successful year. Last year we raised over $265,000, which is what has allowed SAFE to continue being so effective and proactive during the year. Please help us.

As for the bulletins, thankfully we have found a new website assistant who has kindly offered to volunteer their services. This will mean the bulletins will resume as per normal. In fact, you will be pleased to know you will receive a bulletin every week until the end of the year. Enjoy!

IN THE LAST MONTH OR TWO...

Since the last bulletin we have been extremely busy and successful. Activities and successes include:

• the production and launch of SAFE’s first television commercial on pig farming, which has appeared on TV3 over the past three weeks.

• a presentation of SAFE’s work to over 300 key animal welfare and rights representatives in Australia at the Animals Australia inaugural symposium.

• SAFE attendance at all three Vegetarian Expos held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. In addition campaign director Hans Kriek presented a talk at the Expo in the capital.

• a successful charity art auction which raised over $30,000 in proceeds to be used for the LovePigs campaign.

• a presentation by SAFE’s education officer Nichola Kriek on SAFE’s Animals and Us humane education programme to prominent educators, welfarists and teachers attending an Australian seminar on humane values within the education system.

• successful applications for funding to purchase a powerful laptop and other equipment to make our work easier.

• at least 25 stalls or attendances at festivals around the country including the Mind Body and Spirit Festival, Grey Lynn Festival and the Eco Expo.

• a national appeal coordinators workshop last month attended by many of SAFE’s North Island appeal coordinators as part of the lead up to the appeal later this month. More ...

2007 STREET APPEAL...
...only weeks to go. Register now!

Less than three weeks to go! So far over 300 people have registered to collect nationally but we are still a long way from our goal of 1200 collectors. Many centre coordinators are reporting numbers are still well below what they need despite them doing a fabulous job of recruitment. These areas include:

Kaitaia, Kaikohe, Kerikeri, Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Matamata/Tirau, Tokoroa, Raglan, Rotorua, Gisborne, Tauranga, New Plymouth, Napier, Hastings, Dannevirke, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Levin, Feilding, Kapiti Coast, Lower/Upper Hutt, Wellington, Nelson, Richmond, Motueka, Takaka, Blenheim, Greymouth, Hokitika, Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, Cromwell, Queenstown, Invercargill

If you do not live in one of the above areas and would like to collect, we would still love to have your help!

COLLECTING IN YOUR AREA
If you can spare a few hours in your area to support local volunteers please let us know now. Click here to register or call 03 379 9711 for more details.

ASK A FRIEND!
One of the quickest and easiest ways you can help increase collector numbers is by asking a friend or two to come along. It’s loads of fun and a great way to meet likeminded people. If possible let your local coordinator know beforehand to help with planning but if you turn up with a friend, partner or family member that’s fine. The more the merrier!

Tips to keep everyone happy!

Catering for vegetarians
There is nothing better than being prepared and appreciated. If you are hosting friends find out whether any of your guests are vegetarian or vegan. Vegetarians don’t eat meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish, crustacea or any other product which has been made from slaughtering an animal. They also tend to use free-range eggs. Vegans go a bit further by also cutting out milk, dairy products, eggs and honey.

It’s also helpful to remember that vegetarians and vegans, like anybody else, may have food allergies or things that they just don’t like. If you're going to cook something special for them, it’s well worth a quick chat in advance to make sure that your efforts will be appreciated.

Read the labels
If you’re not used to shopping for vegetarians, the main things to watch out for are animal fat, gelatine (which turns up in lots of desserts) and animal rennet (which can be used in cheese). Many E-numbers are also animal derived.
