SAFE words

A new term was coined last week here in New Zealand that has ignited a global debate. Almost a week later, an astonishing 35,000 internet hits return from my Google search. Just who happens to make top billing is SAFE's very own education officer Nichola Kriek! There is no denying it has become onemighty-hot-topic. So inflamed are some email blogs they are unprintable. They range from the venomous to the laughable to the even hard to swallow!

So what is everyone talking about? Vegansexuals. People who do not eat any meat or animal products, and who choose not to be sexually intimate with nonvegan partners whose bodies, they say, are made up of dead animals. As a vegan it’s logical - and I love my logic! Others, of course mainly nonvegetarians or vegans, are less forgiving. They say it is taking the idea of what you eat to the extreme. Fruit-loops! Nutcases! Crazy! And that's just for starters.

The co-director of the New Zealand Centre for Human and Animal Studies at Canterbury University, Annie Potts, said she coined the term after doing research on the lives of "cruelty-free consumers". Her research project, summarised in a report titled Cruelty-Free Consumption in New Zealand: A National Report on the Perspectives and Experiences of Vegetarians and other Ethical Consumers, surveyed 157 people nationwide about everything from battery chickens to sexual preferences. Annie, and Nichola (who bravely put her hand up to comment to a flurry of over-zealous media), have been fielding interview requests from all over the world including the BBC and even US television show Late Show with David Letterman!

I don't know what to make of all the attention. I do know vegans have been pounded to resemble squashed fruit this week but even vegans can have a sense of humour and not take it too personally. For me at least, it sure has been funny. I feel that at the very least it gets people talking, one way or another.
