SAFE words

Who would believe voluntary organisations would be worth the time, energy and money to infiltrate and spy on? Obviously big corporations profiteering from exploiting animals and the environment thought so. For almost two years two shrewd and devious ‘human watchdogs’ gained the trust and friendship of those within the top ranks of several environmental and animal rights organisations. They were paid to spy and disclose secret information to their employer, a private investigation company called Thompson and Clark Investigations (TCI). That was of course until they got exposed a few weeks ago. It was a bold and underhand strategy that has stunned advocacy organisations across the nation. While it has been revealed Solid Energy, a state-owed enterprise, had contracted TCI to spy on peace and environmental groups, a more compelling question for us is who has engaged TCI to spy on the animal rights community?

SAFE may have some ‘telltales’ within its ranks but that wouldn’t concern me. We have nothing to hide and the manner in which we operate offers little information that would be detrimental to our campaign strategies. What does worry me is if people who volunteer within such organisations become paranoid and distrusting of those around them. It can turn an organisation septic and dysfunctional. Perhaps this is the plan of the likes of Solid Energy. Infighting is often the biggest threat to many voluntary groups and what better way to get things simmering than to plant an infiltrator. We must overcome this positively and remain open to those who share the common goal of animal liberation and peace.

SAFE AT WOMEN'S LIFESTYLE EXPO
SAFE recently held another successful stall at the Women's Lifestyle Expo in Hawkes Bay following on from a stall at the same Expo in Palmerston North that raised over $300. Palmerston North coordinator Mary Murray also organised a raffle. Stall volunteers reported that the response from nearly everyone was positive and it was very motivating for them to be doing something positive by increasing awareness of SAFE's LovePigs campaign. Well done everyone!

At a recent Auckland volunteers meeting Kellie Lehmann from Synoptic ran the first of a two-part series of training workshops teaching effective communication skills. She was well received and had a wealth of great information to share. Thanks Kellie!
