SAFE words

I was recently given a CD with a collection of images on it. They were of pigs and chickens. It wasn’t the type of imagery you wanted to view while enjoying lunch I can tell you. I showed a friend and they said “Oh my god, how terrible. Can you imagine the outcry if that happened here”. My reply shocked them. They were in disbelief. They could not accept these unfortunate animals were in New Zealand, being made to suffer by fellow New Zealanders.

It’s a typical response though. People find it hard to accept New Zealand pig and chicken farmers can be so cruel to animals by keeping them locked inside vile industrial sheds. It’s not a life we can adequately imagine. The law regards such treatment as cruel and illegal — but not when it involves pigs or chickens. Well, not yet, anyway!

The images are certainly compelling. Consumers who become aware of the living conditions of factory farmed pigs and chicken cease to eat pork, chickens and in some cases, eggs. Big industries are standing their ground too. Burger King made an encouraging assault on the pig and chicken industries recently by announcing they will no longer buy from suppliers who keep hens in cages or pigs in crates. Fantastic news! Unfortunately, the announcement only applies to North America and Canada but it’s a great start. There is no reason why the same couldn’t happen here since farming conditions are similar and surely Burger King New Zealand would want to follow suit? Perhaps it’s time for us all to start asking them! Click here.

MEAT CONFERENCE CHALLENGED
Save the Earth, Quit meat! was the message SAFE’s ‘butcher’ and ‘farmers’ spread amongst lunch-time pedestrians on Wellington’s waterfront recently. The action was held outside Te Papa where a conference was being held to celebrate 125 years of meat exports from New Zealand. The butcher carved up the earth (represented by a large cake) to symbolise the way eating meat destroys the earth. The pieces of cake were given out to passers-by with information about the detrimental effect meat eating has on the environment. more...
