SAFE words

We’re back! I apologise for the absence of these bulletins. A key person involved in their production had a personal emergency and was unable to offer their services until now. - Ed

SAFE excels at taking the message to the people. This time of the year this is particularly noticeable with SAFE volunteers frequently positioned at stalls, events and festivals throughout the country. In Wellington, our team holds weekly vegetarian ‘Not-Dog’ stands raising funds and promoting a cruelty free alternative.

Last month we held stalls at the two Pretenders concerts and just last weekend SAFE attended the 2007 Wildfoods Festival in Hokitika. For the second year running our Vegan Meaty Gonads were a solid hit amongst the throng of festival goers, to the point we sold out! While this year we weren’t a contender for best stall (we were within the top three places last year), we still challenged the crowd to try something ‘meaty’ and risqué that tasted fabulous but didn’t have to be killed. And they loved it! SAFE was also recently at the two-day Pet Expo in Auckland signing up members and attracting support for our campaign against intensive pig farming.

You may see some of our volunteers in your local arcade or markets. If you don’t perhaps this is your calling? Stalls are important way to communicate our compassionate message. What better time is there for you to give us a hand in your area?

Director

PROTESTS TO HELP SAVE THE EARTH
A national meat conference celebrating 125 years of exporting meat is planned at the end of the month in Wellington. The two-day event brings industry leaders together with business partners, politicians and even celebrities to celebrate eating meat. SAFE and other animal rights campaigners intends to remind them of what a meat-based diet really means for animals, human health and the environment. SAFE plans to launch www.QuitMeat.org.nz designed to highlight the detrimental effects of meat consumption. For protest info contact safe@safe.org.nz

DID YOU KNOW?
The Year of the Pig
Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality. Those born in pig years tend to have excellent manners, make and keep friends, work very hard, and appreciate luxury. They are very loving and make loyal partners. SAFE is calling upon people to make this year pig friendly by giving up pig meat as a positive way to celebrate the pig.
