SAFE words

Despite it being week four of January already, welcome to 2007 anyway! New Year is certainly the time we take a new lease on life and try to make significant changes in our lives: lose weight, change our diet, start an exercise programme, join a gym or go real tough...give up cigarettes, alcohol, coffee or meat! Aaaagh, not the coffee! I think my 4.30am starts would suffer greatly if I were to forgo my ritual of a freshly ground plunger coffee each morning.

Whatever our vice we can change for the betterment of ourselves or others – animals included. I turned vegetarian and subsequently vegan in protest at harming and killing animals. Becoming a vegan over 15 years ago was difficult as there was little support for, or awareness of, a cruelty free diet. I was treated as if I was from another planet when I mentioned I was vegan. Thankfully the world has grown up to accept a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle as perfectly healthy, nutritious and normal. Check out becoming a vegan at www.vegan.org for some great tips and ideas.

As for 2007, I think it’s going to be a fantastic year for SAFE. It certainly started off extremely well with a record-breaking street day appeal that will aid us greatly in our work this year. It proved to me that SAFE is steadily moving forward and each success means further meaningful differences for animals.

APPEAL A SUCCESS!
SAFE’s 1000-strong menagerie of dedicated collectors should feel proud for making our latest appeal such a success. They collectively helped increase SAFE’s profile and raised over $100,000 more in funds than the previous year, helping us achieve a total of $265,000. That makes 2006 the best year yet! If you’re one of those collectors we thank you. You will be receiving a small package in the post in the next few weeks as our way of saying thanks. more...

SAFE IN THE MEDIA
No sooner had the year begun than reporters were calling SAFE for comment about animal welfare issues. SAFE campaign director Hans Kriek appeared on TV1 News speaking in opposition to the barbaric mutilation of sheep called mulesing. Hans also spoke out against Tegel on Radio Live and Newstalk ZB as well as commenting about, of all things, research about gay sheep! more...

SAFE AIDS PIGS TO SAFE HOME
Calls to help two lovely Auckland-based kunekune pigs called Greta and Garbo were answered by many caring people and SAFE. When friendly 2-year-old female Greta (pure black) and 4-year-old male Garbo (tan, cream & black) were abandoned on a Clevedon property, it was a death sentence for them. The new landowner considered them superfluous and intended to slaughter them unless a new home could be found. Thankfully the Pakuratahi Farm Animal Sanctuary in Upper Hutt agreed to adopt them and Kim, a kind-hearted woman from Wellington, agreed to travel up from Wellington to collect them and take them to their new home. All that stood in the way of the rescue was travel costs of $200. SAFE immediately agreed to cover the cost allowing the two porcine girls to be on their way. But not without drama. more...

BATTERY HEN CRUELTY EXPOSED
Activists in South Auckland raided a battery hen farm to obtain footage revealing horrific conditions inside large poultry sheds. The footage resulted in excellent media exposure highlighting battery hen conditions and prompted the SPCA to launch an investigation. MAF and industry officials have come under fire for failing to properly act to protect the birds. more...
