SAFE words

I recall the first street appeal I helped organise back in 1999. All of two centres were involved — Auckland and Christchurch. It seemed near impossible to effectively coordinate the 60 or so volunteers we had collecting. I recall rejoicing at raising a grand total of $4,000. We thought we were pretty darn amazing. Of course I can scoff at that now when I consider this year we are aiming to raise $200,000. Now THIS amount is truly amazing!

Seven years on we are at an entirely new level of street collecting. Our team of staff and volunteer coordinators are focused and have mastered the art of what works and what doesn’t. This year is already another record-breaker with 28 towns or cities actively involved with street collecting.

Aside from being SAFE’s major fundraiser it is one of the main ways people hear about SAFE. In response to a question we included in a survey asking how people had heard of SAFE, 49 per cent said the street appeal. There is no doubt our appeal is an extremely important part of SAFE promotions. I trust you can be part of it.

If you can spare a few hours in your area to support local volunteers please let us know now. Click here for a list of local centre volunteer coordinators, contact nichola@safe.org.nz or call 03 379 9711 for more details.

    COLLECTING? ASK A FRIEND!
One of the quickest and easiest ways you can help increase collector numbers is by asking a friend or two to come along. It’s loads of fun and a great way to meet other like-minded people. If possible let your local coordinator know beforehand to help with planning but if you turn up with a friend, partner or family member that’s fine.

    STREET POSTERS AND ADVERTS
Keep an eye out for hundreds of posters that are being placed in all collecting areas to help promote the appeal.

SAFE ROCKS AT RISE AGAINST CONCERT!
Hardcore punk band Rise Against invited SAFE to have a stall at their sole New Zealand show. The stall proved a hit with the mostly young and black-clad audience seemingly interested in the plight of animals in New Zealand and the work SAFE does. Stall workers Amy and Caro reported our t-shirts and badges proved really popular and they also signed people up for our upcoming street appeal.

Band members signed a SAFE t-shirt, which will be auctioned at a later date.

    GINGER CRUNCH
If you love ginger you will love this classic recipe. SAFE’s director Anthony offers up a treat to add to those festive feasts.

    200g plain flour
    100g caster sugar
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp ground ginger
    125g margarine
40g crystallised ginger chunks, roughly chopped

    Icing:
    150g margarine
    4 tbsp golden syrup
    270g icing sugar
    1 tbsp ground ginger

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Line a 23cm tin with greaseproof paper. Sift flour, sugar, baking powder and ground ginger into a bowl. With tips of fingers, rub in the margarine until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Lightly mix in the ginger chunks.

Press mixture evenly into the tin. Bake for 25-30 minutes until puffed up and golden brown. Remove from oven and place tin on a wire rack. Before the end of the cooking time, prepare the icing. Melt the margarine and golden syrup in a saucepan over medium heat. Add sifted icing sugar and ground ginger. Stir well. Cook for 2 minutes to prevent the oil from separating from the icing. Pour over the hot base. Gently rock tin to ensure icing covers entire base then leave to set. Cut into squares or bars. Store in an airtight container. Makes heaps for all ya mates to enjoy over the festive season!
