SAFE words

Will you stand up for animals? SAFE is heading towards our most significant fundraising day of the year. It’s our annual street day appeal on Friday 22 December (and 23 December). We need your help to make this year’s appeal another resounding success. Last year we raised over $165,000. This year our team is aiming for a staggering $200,000. Another record-breaker perhaps! Achievable? Well with your help, we could very well achieve this amazing goal.

Only a few years ago we were ‘staggering’ (and quivering) at the mere thought of trying to raise $100,000. Now the team has boundless confidence and is in awe of you, if you’re one of the hundreds of supporters who help collect in their area. An amount like this offers SAFE such a huge opportunity to speak out against animal abuse. I can’t stress enough what raising $200,000 would mean to us. Even more important, what a tremendous gift to be able to give to the animals of New Zealand who need our voice.

This year has been a fantastic year. These fortnightly bulletins and our magazine continue to proclaim victory, success and our achievements. Now we have one last stand for the year. Help us end the year with our largest achievement yet by helping us raise $200,000 for our work for 2007. I urge you to register today.

Director

OPPOSITION TO CIRCUS CONTINUES

GREY LYNN FESTIVAL
Despite the bad weather and terrible rain SAFE’s vegetarian food stall at the recent Grey Lynn Festival in Auckland still managed to achieve sales of $2,000. According to SAFE’s stall organiser, Caro Warburton, the 17 volunteers were fantastic, serving up mouth-watering burgers and bangers in record time. “People enjoyed our food so much that many came back several times during the day. We were by far the most popular stall at the event with a constant flow of people throughout the day,” says Caro.

APPEAL COLLECTORS NEEDED
Compassionate New Zealanders in 27 cities will collectively raise funds next month as part of SAFE’s national collection day. Can you help collect in your area?

SAFE is aiming for over 900 collectors to help raise over $200,000. This is an important time for SAFE, which is why we need your help. We ask that collectors commit to a minimum of 2 hours but if you can collect for longer that would be great! In most centres the collection will run from 8am to 7pm on Friday and from 9am to 4pm on Saturday. As a special bonus for your hard work for every $50 that you collect we will give you a $5 music or The Body Shop voucher! more...

STICKING UP APPEAL POSTERS
SAFE is currently placing thousands of collector recruitment and appeal posters around the country. If you can assist with placing these in your area or workplace let us know. Email safe@safe.org.nz

RISE AGAINST STALL
SAFE has been invited to have a stall at Rise Against’s only New Zealand concert at the St James Theatre this week. The selfdescribed hardcore punks from Chicago have a passion for animal rights. They are vegetarians and actively support US-based animal rights group Peta. Their music video “Ready to fall” highlights environmental degradation, factory farming and sport hunting. “We are really excited about this opportunity to be at an event with such a well-known and highly regarded international band,” says Caro. Tickets available at www.ticketdirect.co.nz

ST KEVIN’S CRAFT FAIR
SAFE is also having a stall at St Kevin’s Craft Fair on Thursday 7th December from 6pm-9pm. This is a great opportunity for some Christmas shopping while enjoying live music, food and wine, and a lively crowd and atmosphere. The SAFE shop will also be open late on the night.

CARO’S MOIST DARK RICH CHOCOLATE CAKE

SAFE’s Auckland shop manager serves up one of her favourite cake recipes:

I have tried many vegan chocolate cake recipes and this one comes out perfect every time. Enjoy.

125g margarine
1 1/4 C sugar
2 C plain flour
2 tsp baking powder (slightlyheaped)
2 dsp cocoa
2 dsp golden syrup
2 C soya milk
2 level tsp baking soda

Melt sugar and margarine together. In a large bowl sift flour, baking powder and cocoa and pour in golden syrup. Add melted margarine and sugar mixture and whisk. Add baking soda to warm soya milk and whisk for 2 minutes. Add to mixture. Grease cake tin, dust with flour (1 tsp) and bake at 175 degrees Celsius for 35 minutes.
