SAFE words

'Keeping up Appearances' was the title of my presentation at a recent Australasian animal welfare conference in Melbourne. I was talking about how important it is to always appear positive, professional and successful when communicating and how this helps gain media attention and support. Both Hans (SAFE's campaign director) and I spoke to a large audience and our message was warmly welcomed. Our Australian campaigning cousins just think the world of SAFE. Even a little envious, those Aussies!

We are highly admired for our dynamic, creative and professional approach to getting the animal rights message across to the New Zealand public. Of course anyone fortunate enough to listen to Hans speak will know he's a bit of an enthusiastic Zen master when showing off SAFE's campaign and media skills. He's a great speaker and let's face it, SAFE is damn successful at keeping up appearances in the media. This week alone, Hans has done one television, two newspaper and four radio interviews putting forward SAFE's view. That makes over 20 TV interviews so far this year! Awesome effort!!

The conference was organised by Animals Australia, one of Australia's leading animal advocacy groups. I was delighted to see that this group had grown exponentially since the last conference and they too are gaining greater respect from the public and media. This successful kind of campaigning is what is necessary if we are really to make a difference for animals. It's just as important as volunteering. On that note, SAFE has heaps coming up and as always you are warmly invited to assist us. See you on the volunteer list!

Anthony Terry
Director

MARINELAND BATTLE NOT OVER
Attempts to keep Napier's Marineland open and to bring in new dolphins continue to be orchestrated by locals. According to recent reports, local residents are pressuring Napier list MP Russell Fairbrother to set up a working group with representatives from Napier City Council and Central Government with the aim of keeping Marineland open. It appears Mr Fairbrother has already sought a reassurance from Conservation Minister Chris Carter that he will not change legislation to ban dolphin imports to New Zealand in the immediate future. more...

ZOO CONDEMNED BY LEADING INTERNATIONAL ZOOS
SAFE has attracted further media attention in relation to Wellington Zoo. Two leading zoos in Europe are backing SAFE's concerns against the Wellington Zoo's rent-a-cheetah programme. In a recent article published in the Dutch newspaper Friesch Dagblad Dutch zoo spokespeople claim the programme shows little respect for the animals and is not educational. more...

SURVEY TO HELP ANIMALS

GREEN PARTY COOKBOOK RELEASE
SAFE held a stall at the Green Party's cookbook release function held recently. SAFE placed an advertisement promoting veganism in the recipe book and donating a prize. Keynote speaker Sue Kedgley gave recognition to SAFE for its great work and noted that a diet free of meat was superior. The environmentally conscious audience meant lots of people were interested in learning more about about SAFE's work.

MORE VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED - ROTORUA
If you live in Rotorua and are keen to do more to help SAFE and animals, please get in touch now. Local volunteers hold monthly stalls to raise awareness, sell merchandise and collect donations. They are also organising a fundraiding raffle. They need more volunteers to help, particularly with the street appeal coming up. Please contact Sacha if you can help: sacha@safe.org.nz

NELSON ECOFEST
SAFE's display stand and seminar on veganism at the recent ECOFEST in Nelson was well worth all the effort and planning. Factory farming was the theme with a 'mock-up' pig and chickens in cages on display. A Compassion in World Farming video narrated by Joanna Lumley was very effective.

Nelson reports: Thanks to our sponsors (The SoyWorks, VeganPet, the Vegetarian Society and Bell Computers) we were able to distribute informative material. We also handed out samples courtesy of Bean Supreme, VeganPet and Lisa's Hummus. Bean Supreme also donated a gift basket of their products, which we raffled. We were given an excellent corner site and felt we had more than our share of exposure from the 8,000-strong crowd who attended the two-day festival.
