SAFE words

Last weekend I was in awe at some of the most amazing wildlife photographs on Earth. I was viewing the work of the winners of the international Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition currently touring Australia and now on display at the Brisbane Museum.

This prestigious competition is organised by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine. Amateur and professional photographers alike compete to be named Wildlife Photographer of the Year. The annual competition attracts over 20,000 entries from more than 60 countries. The work is stunning, beautiful and captures animals at their best — hunting, stalking, bonding or just soaring through the sky passing the world by. Photographers with a passion for animals labour in some of the most remote places in the world seeking ‘that right shot’. You have to admire the photographers. Animals are never the easiest subjects to photograph. The exhibition caused even me to reflect why we should marvel at animals. The exhibition was extremely well attended. I hope it will tour New Zealand. Everyone deserves to share the experience. You can also buy the book version.

SAFE has commissioned three amazing professional wildlife photographs which are now circulating New Zealand as part of a campaign against fur and exotic leather. The street posters and print advertisements are the brainchild of Lowe International, one of New Zealand’s most successful creative agencies, and were created on behalf of SAFE. The images have been cleverly executed to graphically illustrate the consequences of wearing fur. Check them out!

Christchurch SAFE volunteers held a successful stall at the bi-annual Mind Body Spirit Festival recently. Hundreds of festival-goers were interested to learn about factory farming issues, made donations and purchased SAFE merchandise. Over $200 was raised. Their vegetarian pot luck dinner held the same weekend was very well attended with over 20 people participating. Keep up the great work, guys!

SAFE had stalls at the Vegetarian Film Festival held in Auckland and Christchurch. Both venues reported good attendance and the festival was considered a great success. The highlight in Auckland was the vegan chocolate and nut-dipped ice-cream!

ST KEVIN’S CRAFT FAIR
Auckland SAFE office manager Caro Warburton reported she was amazed at the high attendance, groovy items on sale and the fantastic live music. The SAFE stall attracted a lot of interest. The next craft fair is set for December for those in Auckland wanting to be involved.

VEGETARIAN FOOD & LIFESTYLE FESTIVAL
An amazing event in Auckland on 1 October organised by the Vegetarian Society. Around 20 stalls offered delicious vegan and vegetarian food, information, free taste tests and cooking demonstrations. The festival attracted over 1,000 and was buzzing with activity all day. SAFE sold over $500 of merchandise, gave out around 400 cards promoting the SAFE shop, and got lots of new people signed up for the bulletin. A big thanks to Lance, Alea, Ruth, Colin and Jesse for their amazing help.
